In the Guided Discovery approach, the emphasis is on both content and process. The course is carefully structured as a series of modules containing problems that direct students into learning the appropriate basic and professional content; for example, the basic and pre-clinical sciences and clinical content in medicine. While it is essential to allow students to discover the learning issues from the problem, written guidelines are provided and tutor prompting occurs to ensure that all content areas are considered.

The 'client' either gets a solution to its problem, or at the very least a perspective on it through fresh sets of eyes. Service learning is particularly prevalent in US universities and it relates students to their local communities as volunteers where they work with people, rather than with industries where they might ultimately find employment.
