The last category, “other,” represents crimes that do not easily fit into the other categories. These crimes may or may not be violent. Some charges that went into the “other” category included gun charges, eluding, fraud, threatening a witness, perjury, and vandalism. A couple of trends jump out right away. First, if you group sex crimes, assault, domestic violence, and homicide or murder into a category of violent crimes, together they represent 53 percent of the charges. Thus, more than half of athletes’ arrests are related to violence.

The granddaddy of hazing incidents in sport occurred in August 2003 when Mepham High School (Bellmore, New York) football players attended training camp in rural Pennsylvania. More than 20 felony charges resulted from events that took place over several nights at camp. In attacks reminiscent of the Abner Louima case, at least three members of the team aged 15 to 17 rubbed mineral ice on broomsticks, pinecones, and golf balls and used those items to penetrate freshman players anally while the rest of the boys in the cabin bore witness.

This incident led to the suspension of eight players. The coach, who believed that the school blew the situation out of proportion, resigned, stating that he wanted to take responsibility so as to avoid damaging the program. Exemplifying a common theme, many parents responded with hostility to the sanctioning, stating that the paddling incident was just harmless fun.
